Junior Angler Tournament

The Stuart Sailfish Club (SSC) hosted the 1st half of the 34th Annual Junior Angler Tournament on August 9th-10th, which is one of the largest junior tournaments on the Treasure Coast. The tournament sponsors children from our local community, and from the two Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches in Live Oak and Bartow, for a day of fishing and fun. This year’s tournament, was held out of the Port Salerno “Pocket” with fish “weighed-in” at the Pirates Cove Resort, and our captains meeting and awards held at our New Tiki Hut Pavilion!  The tournament was postponed from Aug 2nd-3rd due to inclement weather.  Due to scheduling conflicts the tournament is being held on 2 separate dates.

Our Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranch children will fish on  the Charter boat, Safari 1 on September 7th along with some of our local children. There will be more awards and raffles for the 2nd half of this tournament.

Scales will be open at Pirates Cove at 1pm for the Safari 1 Charter on September 7th.

We have a few spaces left on the Safari 1 for SEPTEMBER 7TH .  Cost is $40 for members and $45 for non-members. All Angler’s will receive (1) T-shirt, (1) Backpack, (1) Luncheon Ticket & Raffle tickets. Registration forms are available online (below) and at most bait & tackle shops, or just stop by and see us at the Clubhouse – 3867 SE Evans Terrace, Stuart, Fl.  There will be educational opportunities for anglers to learn knot tying, fishing ethics, rigging, and more.

This year, we have created a Champion’s Division. It includes any/all prior winners of the Ted Glasrud Outstanding Junior Angler Award, & any/all anglers fishing on boats with a professional fishing captain (EXCEPT Safari 1 Charter).

Previous years Tournaments have hosted more than 80 children including dozens from the Youth Ranches, giving them a real offshore fishing experience, that includes going through a true weigh in, training and more. The tournament also hosts several kids from Lahia House, an organization for underprivileged kids in Port Salerno, as well as kids from Scout Troop 888 in Hobe Sound.

The children, which also includes Club members’ children and grandchildren, as well as community residents, fish on Saturday morning, then are given training on catch and release, fishing ethics, safety and knot tying. Everyone is provided a great lunch. A large part of the experience are the raffles and awards. Each child is given a ticket for a chance to win bikes, skateboards and other fun prizes. After the awards program, each child is given a rod, reel and tackle box. Prior to fishing, each child is also given an backpack filled with school supplies and more.

More than two dozen volunteers help put on the successful event, including retired captains, top notch fishermen and local businesses.

Donations are still needed for the event, including bikes, skateboards, helmets, backpacks and other age-appropriate items. Cash contribution are also welcome. To make a donation, please contact Stuart Sailfish Club (772) 286-9373, or email sailfish@stuartsailfishclub.com .
