The tournament also hosts several kids from Lahia House, an organization for underprivileged kids in Port Salerno, as well as kids from Scout Troop 888 in Hobe Sound.
The children, which also includes Club members’ children and grandchildren, as well as community residents, fish on Saturday morning, then are given training on catch and release, fishing ethics, safety and knot tying. Everyone is provided a great lunch. A large part of the experience are the raffles and awards. Each child is given a ticket for a chance to win bikes, skateboards and other fun prizes. After the awards program, each child is given a rod, reel and tackle box. Prior to fishing, each child is also given an backpack filled with school supplies and more.
More than two dozen volunteers help put on the successful event, including retired captains, top notch fishermen and local businesses.
Saltwater Sisters Ladies Tournament
The Stuart Sailfish Club has hosted the Annual Saltwater Sisters Lady Angler Tournament for more than 34 years. The event is described as more of a party with a fishing tournament on the side. Organizers host a Captain’s Party, a themed costume contest that includes boat decorating, and an amazing awards dinner. The 2019 tournament, will be held at Pirates Cove Resort, Sept 20th-21st, 2019.
The Tournament itself allows participants to fish for Sailfish, Dolphin, Kingfish, Wahoo, Grouper and Snapper. Famed marine artist Carey Chen has been the honorary chair of the event the past two years.
One of the biggest parts of this tournament is the unbelievable silent and live auctions with dozens of fishing and non-fishing related items up for bid.
The past four years, part of the proceeds have benefited local 501 c 3 charities, including Friends in Pink, a local organization that provides financial assistance for those on the Treasure Coast battling breast cancer; and Windsor Community Angels, an organization that pays for free mammograms for Treasure Coast residents.
